A huge thank you to everyone who made this possible:

Fiserv Forum staff, Medical College of Wisconsin staff, our partners Milwaukee Bucks, Medical College of Wisconsin, Greater Milwaukee Foundation, Zilber Family Foundation, Ignite Change, FiservForum, Rebel Converting, Habitat For Humanity, and every single volunteer that made masks at home.

How did the Milwaukee Million Mask challenge begin?

After learning of the shortage of masks nationwide and how it was affecting Milwaukee, Thaddeus Kryshak, a recent graduate in engineering and physics from the University of Miami, spoke to his father Mike Kryshak, owner of Rebel Converting about how they might be able to produce facemasks using the materials that they were already using to produce hospital-grade disinfectant wipes. Thaddeus then developed a way to convert the same material used to manufacture hospital-grade disinfectant wipes into a face mask that is similar to a surgical mask.

Locally, Medical College of Wisconsin is assisting with triaging requests for masks, with health care workers taking priority. Last week, the Milwaukee Bucks came on board to act as a nearly touch-free distribution point at the Fiserv Forum and are providing security and facility management onsite to distribute mask kits to be assembled.  United Way of Greater Milwaukee & Waukesha County is mobilizing volunteers to pick up the mask-making kits to assemble at their home to address this critical need in our local community.

How did we ensure masks are sanitized and safe?

In order to ensure safe and sanitized masks there was an initial verification by the volunteer on the registration site followed by a health status phone call prior to volunteer picking up kit. Once the kits were dropped off, they went through a heating process and a 72 hour minimum quarantine period before being distributed to the community.

How can I continue to volunteer?

If you're interested in continuing to help with masks please visit this site: https://www.jomministry.org/

If you're interested in other virtual opportunities check out our volunteer site: https://www.unitedwaygmwc.org/Volunteer

How do I request masks?

We know the need for masks out there is great.

Please keep in mind that the availability of these non-medical grade masks will increase over the next few weeks as our volunteers continue assembly. We ask that you think conservatively and request only the quantity of masks you need for the next 10 days, so that everyone who needs masks can receive them in a timely manner.
