A New Generation Stepping Up

Main Content

These days it seems like everyone is talking about Millenials. Young people don’t vote. They are addicted to smartphones.  They’re too self-centered.

My opinion? Ignore the haters.  When it comes to getting involved in the community, Millenials step up. In a study done by the National Conference on Citizenship, “Millenials, so far appear to be more civically engaged than their immediate predecessors, “Generation X.”

As the voice of a fellow Gen Xer, reading that statement made me not only motivated to do more on my own generations’ behalf, but also very excited about the impact people born after 1980 can have on our community.

That’s one of the reasons United Way is looking to get this group more engaged in volunteering through the group LINC.

LINC (Lead, Impact, Network, Change) is way for young professionals to elevate their community, connections and social calendar.

This weekend, United Way LINC is offering its first ever volunteer event at Fondy Farm in Port Washington. On Saturday from 10am-2pm volunteers can help build a fence, harvest crops and end the day with a fun fall hayride and free beer.

Sound like fun? If you’re a Millenial reading this, learn more and sign up.

If you’re a Gen Xer, please don’t continue to make us look bad.  Step up and volunteer with United Way.  It really is that easy.
