Becoming a Big Brother through Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Milwaukee was one of the best decisions I ever made. It was a decision I thought about for far too long. I kept thinking, “Would I have enough time to dedicate, in order to be a good mentor?”
Then one Sunday a friend of mine was at my church making a presentation about becoming a “Big”. I took that as a sign I should finally sign up. Turns out, it was one of the best decisions of my life. I have been matched with Desmond, my “Little,” for 7 years and it has been a very rewarding experience. There isn’t any one big moment that sticks out as the best; but rather the overall friendship between us that has made this mentorship so special. We always have a good time when we are together, and I always find time to spend with him.
Our time together has ranged from deep philosophical discussions, like what super power would be the best to possess, to heated physical competition bowling or playing mini golf. We have attended sporting events and plays; community programs and community festivals. The best part, wasn’t the actual activity, but that we did it together.
During the last 7 years, I have had the privilege of watching Desmond become an intelligent, polite, kind, creative, curious, generous, funny, and honorable young man anyone would be proud to call their “Little Brother.”
Last year, he and I were honored to be named “Male Match of the Year” by Big Brothers Big Sisters, as well as awarded the “Excellence in Education” honor from the Milwaukee Public School Board. It was truly an honor that caught us both by surprise. We had forgotten that we are part of an actual “program.” Now, we just see each other as “brothers” and that is the best reward to get from a program.
