New Volunteer App Brings a Fresh Look to Volunteerism

United Way of Greater Milwaukee is proud and excited to announce the launch of our new Volunteer App, available for free for iPhone and iPad devices. The app will take our volunteer and community engagement efforts to new heights by allowing users to view local volunteer opportunities in Education, Income and Health on an interactive map of Greater Milwaukee. Using GPS to pinpoint your location, the app makes it easy to find meaningful volunteer opportunities in your organization's own neighborhood and better enables individuals and companies to make a real difference.

iPhone and iPad users can visit the Apple App Store to download or learn more about the app. Using a different device? View the interactive map online.

Day of Action

Thank you to the 100+ volunteers who lent a hand completing projects at two of our agency program partners, Pathfinders and Vision Forward, during this year's Day of Action. This nationwide event is held annually on the longest day of the year, June 21, to promote volunteerism and community-wide involvement. Our Community Impact

Education: Intern Day of Action Motivates Youth to Make a Difference
Student interns from United Way corporate partners across Milwaukee will come together in the spirit of volunteerism on July 2 for the annual Intern Day of Action event. More than 420 interns from 9 corporate partners will participate in a variety of fun volunteer projects that help to make an immediate, visible impact on nonprofit organizations within our community. The majority of intern volunteer groups will focus on helping United Way to "change a child's story" by serving as a mentor and friend to local youth for the day. Learn more about Intern Day of Action or how your company can get involved next year.

Income: Turning Unemployment into Opportunity
Denzel enrolled into the United Way-funded Wisconsin Community Services (WCS) Employment Program in April. At 18 years old, he was struggling to support his girlfriend, his 2-year-old son and 1-year-old daughter. Despite a rigorous nine-month search for employment, Denzel was unable to find work. He attended an orientation for the WCS program and his case manager recommended he apply for the Cable Installation Program. The program requires individuals to complete four weeks of training in to addition to job readiness classes to develop and refine interviewing and employment skills.

Upon completion of the program, Denzel was hired full-time by Munger Technical Services Inc. as an entry level Cable Installer in July. He continues to work full-time with benefits and is better able to provide for his family. Since then, he has also recommended the WCS program to friends looking for employment.

Health: Fondy Farmers Market is Open for the Season
Fondy Food Center's Fondy Farmers Market is now open for the season! The market, which receives funding from United Way, provides fresh and affordable produce to Milwaukee residents. What many may not realize is 60% of low income Milwaukee residents don't have access to healthy food. Watch a video about Fondy Farmers Market and their partnership with United Way.

Make it Fun - Successful Employee Engagement

Encouraging Literacy - Emerging Readers Program
Give. Advocate. Volunteer. That's what it means to Live United. We want you to stay engaged in the great work your dollars are doing in the community throughout the year. Summer months provide the perfect opportunity to engage employees in unique opportunities to help them experience the power behind Living United.

  • Give - Many children throughout Greater Milwaukee will not be school-ready as the new school year approaches in late August. Your organization can help set students up for success through a simple backpack and school supply drive. Collect backpacks and supplies and include hand-written notes of encouragement for local students.
  • Advocate - Stress. Poor housing. Unemployment. Lack of pre-natal care. Bed Sharing. All of these factors contribute to high infant mortality rates in Milwaukee. There isn't a silver bullet to lowering infant mortality rates, but in this video a mom explains how you can help by stepping up in your community. Your actions could save a life - Advocate.
  • Volunteer - Did you know that active volunteers are 10 times more likely to give a financial donation? Help your employees understand the value of United Way through participation in a summer volunteer opportunity. Explore our Volunteer page.
If you are interested in working with United Way to develop a customized employee engagement plan, please contact Karissa Kleven at kkleven@unitedwaymilwaukee.org or by phone at 414.263.8160.
