Education: "Show You Care, Share": A Children's Book
United Way of Greater Milwaukee is pleased to announce the creation of our very own children's book, "Show You Care, Share," printed

with financial support from Johnson Controls. The book was written by Karissa Kleven and illustrated by Dane Gagnon, two members of United Way's own marketing and communications team. The story follows Victor and his pet hedgehog, Harry as they learn how important it is to show you care and share with others while on a field trip through downtown Milwaukee.
The publication further enhances our family philanthropy, early childhood literacy and volunteer efforts by enabling parents, caregivers and teachers to highlight the importance of sharing and caring with the young people in their lives. The book is being distributed at several community events throughout the campaign and is also offered as a giving incentive. Individuals can also
order books online. While we are happy to offer the book free of charge, individuals are responsible for the shipping and handling fees.
Income: Providing Hope for Returning Veterans
United Way invests in programs to provide veterans in the Milwaukee metropolitan area with the best possible support, services and training needed to give them hope. This year, United Way is proud to have two veterans serving as Loaned Executives for our community campaign, Ross Baumann and Mike Pierce. We thank them for their service both to our country and our community.
Veterans Day is on November 11 and there are many ways for you and your company to show your support.
Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) develops and promotes employer support for National Guard and Reserve service by advocating relevant initiatives, recognizing outstanding support, increasing awareness of applicable laws and resolving conflict between employers and service members. Health: Teen Birth Rate Decline
Great news! Milwaukee's teen birth rate - the second highest in the nation less than a decade ago - last year dropped for a fifth year in a row to a new historic low. We still have work to do, but we are on pace to achieve our goal to reduce births to 15 to 17 year olds by 46% by 2015. We also launched the latest tactic in United Way's Teen Pregnancy Prevention Initiative, called "Your Baby's Not a Baby Anymore." The goal of the campaign is to get parents to talk to their kids about healthy relationships. Read coverage to learn more. The ads were launched in October in support of Let's Talk Month, a time when parents are encouraged to have age-appropriate conversations with their children about sex. Parents can access a parent-child communication toolkit through United Way's Baby Can Wait website. The toolkit gives developmentally appropriate information as well as tips on having tough conversations. |

Let the Games Begin - Workplace Campaign Highlights & Ideas

United Community Center Suds up for a Cause
Our proud agency program partner the United Community Center (UCC), had great weather and a fantastic turnout for its Live United carwash held on Friday, September 28. Senior staff members led the charge by helping to wash more than 40 cars in just four hours. This simple but engaging fundraiser collected more than $500 for United Way of Greater Milwaukee's 2012 Community Campaign. Thank you for your support, UCC!
Sweet Treats Increase Employee Participation at Columbia St. Mary's
Columbia Saint Mary's has the right idea. At its kickoff event in early October, the committee offered a local sweet treat favorite, Classy Girl Cupcakes, for just $2 each. With decadent flavors such as pumpkin spice cheesecake, red velvet, peanut butter cup, black forest cheesecake and apple slice cheesecake, the organization showed how sweet it is to Live United. An incredible $2,500 was raised through the sale and added to its workplace campaign.
GE Healthcare Cooks Off for United Way
GE Healthcare held over 10 different iCare Chili Cook-off events in the Milwaukee and Madison area as a means to engage employees and add workplace camaraderie. Preliminary cook-off events were held at each location with the winning eight chefs then facing off at GE's Research Park location in Wauwatosa for the grand finale showdown.
Chili sampling was open to all employees and $2,400 was raised from employee participation alone. An additional 50% match from the GE Fund brought the cook-off total to $3,600. What a fun way to raise funds!

We Energies Kicks off Campaign with Clothing Drive
Hundreds of children in the Milwaukee area will be warmer this winter, thanks to the generosity of We Energies employees who donated winter clothing items in a drive that was sponsored by several internal affinity groups, including We Energies' FUEL Milwaukee members and the We Energies Women's Development Network.
Overflowing collection barrels at several We Energies locations in southeastern Wisconsin netted several hundred items including jackets, hats, mittens, sweatshirts, jeans and socks. The clothing was delivered to five United Way agency program partners that support quality youth programming.
This clothing drive was a great way to get employees involved and engage them in the needs of our community. We Energies kicks off their workplace campaign with a bang at the end of this month. |
