Our Community Impact - Your Dollars at Work

With the Community Campaign officially in motion, it's important to share exciting program news and information about the impact of donor dollars throughout Greater Milwaukee.

Education LogoEducation: Proud Partner With Milwaukee Succeeds
United Way of Greater Milwaukee is part of Milwaukee Succeeds, a community-wide initiative to ensure there is a strong education pipeline from cradle to career. The focus is on ensuring success for all children whether they attend area public, private or charter schools.

While United Way will participate in many areas of the education pipeline, we are leading the school readiness community team, which focuses on pre-reading/early literacy strategies, as well as emphasizing the importance of childhood immunizations. Other Milwaukee Succeeds collaborative members include the Greater Milwaukee Foundation, the Greater Milwaukee Committee, the Metropolitan Milwaukee Association of Commerce, Milwaukee Urban League and MPS.

Don't forget about the Milwaukee Succeeds Challenge Grant Program.

Income LogoIncome: The Power of Adult Education Programs - Meet Judie
Judie believed she had already earned her GED in 2002, but recently learned the school she obtained it from was not accredited. She needed to have a GED, or she would lose her job. That's when she turned to the YWCA Community Adult Learning Lab, an agency program partner, for help in getting a new GED. The staff immediately began mentoring Judie and took steps to ensure she would succeed.

Judie says one of her proudest moments came when one of her children framed her GED and hung it on their wall at home. "I am always telling them why education is so important," Judie says. Read more success stories.

Health LogoHealth: BMO Harris Bank Makes Investment in Infant Mortality Prevention
BMO Harris Bank demonstrated its ongoing commitment to making communities stronger through the donation of $750,000 over three years to United Way of Greater Milwaukee to promote healthy birth outcomes and reduce the city's staggering infant mortality rate.

The funds from BMO Harris Bank will allow United Way to launch its Healthy Birth Initiative and hire a project director with specific expertise in maternal-child health. United Way will also convene a group of diverse constituents who will assist in the development of the integral strategies that will lead to improvements in birth outcomes. Let the Games Begin - Workplace Campaign Highlights & Ideas

Boosting Employee Participation through Friendly Competition
Ball Miller CompetitionThe Greater Milwaukee community came out on top in 2011 when Ball Corporation "bested" MillerCoors in a spirited competition to see which company could most improve their employee participation rate. The stakes were high - the winning organization would enjoy a cook-out the following summer courtesy of the losing company.

When the smoke cleared, Ball Corporation carried the day, boosting employee participation by an eye-popping 400% over the previous year. MillerCoors recently paid off the bet on August 14 and 16 when it visited Ball and manned a Burger & Brat Grill-Out luncheon for all employees.

Live United On Display
The BonTon Stores proudly support United Way of Greater Milwaukee. In addition to participating in volunteer activities throughout Days of Caring, and nearly doubling its annual golf outing proceeds, BonTon also dressed a Boston Store window in Live United fashion at the Grand Avenue Mall location. Check it out next time you're in the neighborhood.

What a wonderful way to display that Living United is always in style. Thank you to BonTon!

The Marcus Corporation Encourages Leadership Participation
On September 7th, The Marcus Corporation hosted a successful leadership cocktail hour for all leadership-level employees. The event featured inspirational speeches from United Way of Greater Milwaukee President and CEO, Mary Lou Young, City of Milwaukee Health Commissioner, Bevan Baker, and Greg Marcus, President and CEO of The Marcus Corporation.

Other highlights of the evening included the opportunity for donors to invest in United Way of Greater Milwaukee on site with iPads, raffle drawings for exciting prizes, and a "wine pull" which raised over $1,900.

Emerging Leaders Kickoff at Blu
The Emerging Leaders affinity group kicked off its United Way Campaign on September 5 at Blu, located in the Pfister Hotel. Campaign Co-Chair Greg Marcus, welcomed the group and Beverly Watkins from program partner agency, The Next Door Foundation, spoke to the importance of early childhood literacy and its partnership with United Way of Greater Milwaukee's "Reader, Tutor, Mentor" initiative.

Leadership giving begins at $1,200 and is critical to United Way's ability to meet our community's ongoing needs.  Learn more about the Emerging Leaders and leadership level giving.
