Summer Reading

Summer Reading

Stop the summer slide! Kids love summer vacation, but teachers dread the learning loss students will encounter in the fall without regular reading over the summertime. Children can fall three months behind academically while school is out, especially if they don’t have great resources at home or in summer programs for reading and exploring.

United Way has teamed up with great partners to keep kids learning and reading this summer, and offers books to pick out and take home to keep.

READS for Summer Learning

Originally launched by United Way in 2018, READS for Summer Learning uses an evidence-based model from Harvard University that is effective at preserving or growing students’ reading skills over the summer. In 2019, 2nd-5th graders at Lincoln Avenue School in Milwaukee and La Casa de Esperanza have gotten their first of 10 new books individualized to their interests and abilities. Each book comes paired with comprehension activity sheets for students and their parents to complete, and they get to keep the books!

Next Door’s Books for Kids Mobile Library Series

Great readers start early! In partnership with Next Door, parents can help their little ones choose great books for infants and toddlers (and their older siblings) from the Book Mobile and participate in reading and craft activities at 13 special events at Next Door’s partner childcare centers throughout the summer. This year’s theme is Talk-Read-Sing – three great ways to enrich growing brains! Come for the books or volunteer to help!
