Summer Reading

Summer Reading

Stop the summer slide! Kids love summer vacation, but teachers dread the learning loss students will encounter in the fall without regular reading over the summertime. Children can fall three months behind academically while school is out, especially if they don’t have great resources at home or in summer programs for reading and exploring.

United Way has teamed up with great partners to keep kids learning and reading this summer, and offers books to pick out and take home to keep.

READS for Summer Learning

United Way is launching the READS for Summer Learning project in 2018. READS uses an evidence-based model from Harvard University that is effective at preserving or growing students’ reading skills over the summer. In 2018, students in summer programming at Lincoln Avenue School and Browning Elementary will be matched with 10 new books individualized to their interests and abilities. The books are paired with comprehension activity sheets for students and their parents to complete, and they get to keep the books!

The Wheels on the Mobile Library

Great readers start early! In partnership with Next Door, parents can help their little ones choose great books for infants and toddlers (and their older siblings) from the Book Mobile and participate in reading and craft activities at special events at 14 childcare centers throughout the summer. Come for the books or volunteer to help!
