United Way News: August 2017

Help us get books in the hands of all kids this summer!

Help us slow the Summer Slide! It happens to many disadvantaged children this season. They tread water at best or even fall behind, while higher-income children build their skills steadily during the summer months.

Summer learning loss accounts for two-thirds of the achievement gap in reading between low-income children and their middle-income peers by ninth grade.

The good news is that we can close the gap and help students stay on track even when they are out of school. It’s as simple as making sure kids have access to books and enriching activities, a caring adult to help them improve their reading and math skills, and good nutrition to help focus the mind.

Here are three ways YOU can help:
  1. Sign up to be an Emerging Reader and create fun book packages for a local student.
  2. Gather your work team and volunteer to read with kids during Season of Caring 2017.

Parents: check out these tips to keep your kids on track this summer.
