Apply for Project LEAD

On June 5, twenty-eight Project LEAD participants graduated from the board training program. The graduates’ energy, expertise, and experience will bring tremendous value to local nonprofits. United Way is making introductions and helping facilitate board placement for the group. Thank you to Johnson Controls for sponsoring the Spring 2017 class. IT United Makes an Impact

Katrina Hightower (pictured) is a recent college graduate who was featured on TMJ4 in May and United Way’s podcast earlier this year. At IT United’s 2016 Technology Career Fair Katrina met council member Jennifer Anderson who helped her secure an internship with ManpowerGroup in 2016. She recently landed a job with Kohl’s Corporation as a full-time software engineer.

Katrina was featured in a video at her May commencement from UW-Milwaukee’s School of Information Studies. Watch the video to learn about Katrina and her connection to IT United.
   


Emerging Leaders Day of Action

   
The Emerging Leaders led more than 60 volunteers for Day of Action on June 21 at Lincoln Avenue School, a Milwaukee Community Schools Partnership participant. Volunteers packed 1,200 Parent Engagement Kits, painted four classrooms, and spruced up the schoolyard by mulching and planting. Day of Action is a family-friendly event that supports United Way’s efforts and creates resources to improve the well-being of our community. Thank you to Godfrey & Kahn, S.C. for sponsoring this event!


Retire United Day of Service

On June 20, Retire United hosted its annual Day of Service to pack Caregiver Support Kits. More than 50 volunteers packed 1,000 kits with resources and items to help caregivers. The kits will be distributed to partner agencies such as Interfaith Older Adult Programs and ERAs Senior Network Inc. Learn more about the day and how United Way supports caregivers. Help Wanted: Loaned Executives

   
Do you know someone looking for meaningful work? United Way is hiring Loaned Executives for the 2017 community campaign. Loaned Executives support businesses and nonprofits in executing fun and successful workplace giving campaigns and hands-on volunteer activities. Hear more from individuals who have served as Loaned Executives: Veronica, Raven, and Craig. Companies can also loan an employee for the campaign. Women United Bruncheon

On May 25, more than 450 people celebrated the power of women in philanthropy at the annual Women United Bruncheon. The Women’s Leadership Council updated the community on its continued success in preventing teen pregnancy and mentoring teen girls and introduced its plans to support the ALICE population. In addition, the group honored Jane Durment as the Woman of the Year for her longtime leadership, philanthropy, and volunteer work. Check out all the great photos from the event. P5 Awards

   
The Emerging Leaders celebrated the Philanthropic 5 and Philanthropic Youth honorees on June 5 at The Atrium. Attendees learned about the philanthropy, volunteerism, and advocacy of these community leaders. Learn more about the winners and check out photos from the event. Emerging Readers provides an opportunity for busy individuals or families to make an impact in the life of a child. Volunteers are matched with a child in programming at one of United Way’s partner agencies, and they buy books for their match four times a year. Research shows that creating a reading culture at home encourages positive parent-child interactions and that book ownership is key to educational success. Register and learn more.
   


BACKPACK COALITION SUPPLY DRIVE
   
The Backpack Coalition collects backpacks and school supplies for K-12 students in need across the community. Local Boston Stores will host school supply drives July 19 - August 2. Bring your donations to the Boston Store in Brookfield Square on July 22 to meet Green Bay Packers linebacker Jayrone Elliott (pictured). Learn more and get involved.

HaRUNbee 5K WALK/RUN
Organized by the Milwaukee Lifecourse Initiative for Healthy Families (LIHF), HaRUNbee promotes wellness by encouraging families to stay healthy and fit, both mentally and physically. All ages and all races together from Harambee and other neighborhoods for a 5K Walk/Run. The event is a part of Bronzeville Week. Learn more about registration and event details.
