P5 Awards: Last Chance to Register


Celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Philanthropic 5 Awards on Thursday, June 8 at The Atrium in Shorewood. Meet the 2017 honorees who have made an impact through their leadership, volunteerism, mentoring, and philanthropy and learn what the awards mean to community leaders.


Women United Bruncheon

On May 25, more than 450 people celebrated the impact of Women United in our local community. Guests at the Bruncheon learned about Women United’s efforts and accomplishments in promoting health, education and financial stability. United Way honored Jane Durment with the annual Linda T. Mellowes Woman Leader of the Year award. Read more about Jane’s outstanding contributions to the community.
   
Feeling inspired? Donate new or gently used women’s professional attire to help local women successfully interview and obtain employment. Donations can be dropped off at United Way through June. Learn more.


Project LEAD Teaches Board Skills

   
Twenty-eight people completed Project LEAD with the commitment and the skills necessary to become excellent nonprofit board members. They will LEAD with integrity, diversity, and service in mind as they join local nonprofit boards. United Way will celebrate their success with a graduation on June 5 at Johnson Controls.


Women Leaders Mentor Teens

In May, Women United hosted the spring Getting Ready for the Real World mentoring series at James Madison Academic Campus, a Milwaukee Community Schools Partner. Thank you to the 40 volunteers who participated in the three-part series which impacted young women in the freshmen class. Volunteers had one-on-one conversations with students around professionalism, resume-building, skills identification, and interview preparation. Look for this semi-annual opportunity to be posted again in the fall.
   


LINC in the Community

   
LINC has been busy this spring creating imagination kits at the Boys and Girls Club’s Prom and networking with other young professionals the All Boats Rise event during YP Week. LINC committee member Luke Hammer recaps his experience on United Way’s blog.

EMERGING LEADERS' DAY OF ACTION
The Emerging Leaders invite community members to join them for Day of Action, a family-friendly volunteer opportunity that will impact local youth. Volunteers will create parent engagement kits and complete beautification projects at Lincoln Avenue Elementary, a Milwaukee Community Schools Partner. Day of Action is a global event where thousands of people in more than 400 communities will volunteer through United Way.

Backpack Coalition
   
Help students in Waukesha and Milwaukee Counties start school this fall with a brand new backpack filled with supplies. The Backpack Coalition, which has been helping kids succeed for 20 years, gave away 3,100 filled backpacks last year. Hold a supply drive or learn other ways to volunteer for the program.
