Edgar’s shyness and insecurity were holding him back in school. He rarely participated in class discussions and while his grades were adequate, teachers say they didn’t reflect Edgar’s full potential.

When Edgar learned of a United Way-funded after school strings program at the United Community Center, he summoned the courage to join. With time, his parents noticed his self-esteem improving. Edgar soon distinguished himself as one of the best players in his guitar group. This gave him a great sense of accomplishment which spilled over into his school work. Teachers began praising his class participation and his grades improved.

“While learning to play an instrument is a benefit, this program offers so much more,” says Edgar’s instructor, Dinorah Marquez. “It helps children develop emotionally, socially and academically.”

Edgar has been a part of the program for almost four years and continues to do well in school. His parents say the program has helped their son to stay focused, out of trouble and become more motivated in his studies.

Studies show that kids regularly involved in quality after-school programming are as much as 60% more likely to graduate from high school on time.

United Way helps children and youth achieve their potential by funding after school programs that work.
