Gretchen and her husband Phil often deal with the unknown when it comes to battling Gretchen’s multiple sclerosis. But one thing is clear – they will do whatever it takes to stay in their own home.

That’s why they have nothing but praise for United Way-funded Aurora Visiting Nurse Association’s Home Health Services (VNA). “Without this help we wouldn’t be able to stay in our apartment. That has been a real blessing,” Gretchen said. She receives daily health visits through the program, allowing her to remain independent.

Phil says the program has also been a lifesaver for him. “During her home health visits, I can run errands, do the things I need to do so we can keep living here,” he says. “I think that without it, we would have a very difficult situation.”

Through it all, Gretchen remains positive. “I kind of take things as they come. I have a wonderful husband who takes exceptionally good care of me. We also have an incredible support system – the VNA, our friends and family,” Gretchen said. “We’re all in this together.”

Phil, who was involved with the city of Milwaukee’s United Way campaign for a number of years, says he now has a greater appreciation for how United Way programs can benefit us all. “I have gotten much more back from United Way than I ever gave,” Phil said. “It has made me aware of how we all ultimately need the help of each other in our community.”
