On November 10 United Way is hosting a free one-day job seminar for local women looking to succeed, find a job or explore a new career. This is the 10th anniversary of the annual event and those who’ve been inspired by it have compiled 10 reasons why you won’t want to miss being a part of it!

  1. “Women that attend the job seminar love the event and share that it’s truly inspiring and uplifting experience” – Shyrida T. Silver Spring Neighborhood Center (staff)
  1. “Every year it just gets better. It’s always an enthusiastic event and every woman regardless of her background and challenges seems to benefit from the seminar.” – Agatha H., ResCare (staff)
  1. The workshops leave the women feeling nurtured and more educated about the changing world of work we live in.  It’s rewarding knowing they leave feeling confident about next steps in their job search.” – Nafessa J., ManpowerGroup (planning committee)
  1. “A number of women who utilize our programs and services at Next Door have attended the job seminar in the past and they feel hands-down that the entire program is “off the chain” – Priscilla W., Next Door (staff)
  1. “The fact that a participant can leave at the end of the day with a professionally done resume, printed and downloaded on to a flash drive is incredible.  That alone makes the event worthwhile.  It also about women sharing their stories with each other and encouraging each other. It is also a very rewarding day for the volunteers and event planners.  I look forward to it every year!” – Jeri K., Community Advocates (staff & planning committee)
  1. “At last year’s seminar I was able to improve my resume and found the interviewing tips were very helpful.  I got a job right after the seminar as a banquet assistant in the culinary field.  I maintained employment for over a year, which is really a big deal to me because I’ve been laid off in the past.  –Past attendee
  1.  “Through this event we have an opportunity to help low income women move forward.  It focuses on giving them the message we are all connected.  Although we may not share one another’s history of trauma, we all have a role to play in helping each other find our way. Women attending the seminar receive the time and individual attention they deserve to help reinforce and repair their sense of value, dignity and self-worth. I am proud to be a part of such a powerful event that helps the women in our community feel more hopeful about their futures.”- Carmen Pitre, Sojourner Family Peace Center
  1. “The amazing young lady I helped with her resume was extremely thankful and could not believe that her employment history could look so professional.  I was genuinely touched by her level of excitement when she took a look at it and exclaimed, ‘I can’t wait to use it!  I’m going to go out and get a job tomorrow!’ Thank you for letting me participate in this wonderful event.”- Andrea, Volunteer coach from Northwestern Mutual
  1. “There’s something in us as women that makes us want to connect with other people. An event like this helps us do that in a constructive way.” – Debra, past attendee
  1. “I’m really happy I was able to attend this event, a lot has changed in the work force and I need to reboot and boost my skills.”-Cheryl, past attendee

We need local volunteers to serve as resume, interview and financial wellness coaches. Learn more about volunteering at the event!
