5 Tips to Save on Summer Travel

Let’s be honest summer in Wisconsin is short. When the temperatures start to soar and you finally no longer need a jacket, most families like to take advantage of the few warm months and invest in some outdoor fun!

As you know, for any summer adventure there is usually a price tag attached. So how can families still have fun without breaking their budget? It’s all about planning. Here are my 5 tips to save big on summer travel.

1. Create a budget

Figure out how much you have and how much you actually want to spend on your summer adventure.  This price should include total cost of transportation, food, lodging and activities. It is important to be realistic so you don’t end up overspending.

2. Save on gas

The internet is a great way to shop around and estimate costs of traveling to your desired destination. You can even estimate how much gas money you will spend. If you plan to drive to your summer adventure, don’t forget using the air conditioner also costs more money. If you can, dress comfortably and use it as little as possible.

3. Beware of hidden airfare costs

Websites like Travelocity.com and Expedia.com are great places to start when it comes to getting good prices for a flight. But beware that price doesn’t include other hidden added costs such as baggage fees, check in fees or weight restrictions for luggage. These are good things to consider when deciding whether to drive or fly to your destination.

4. Affordable lodging

When planning where you will stay, you need to ask yourself if it will meet all your lodging needs and still fit within your budget. Do you need a kitchen? Refrigerator? Will it include basic toiletries? Do you rent a house versus a room? Stay with other family or camp? Does your stay include tickets to attractions or free breakfast? Will you need Wi-Fi? These are all important things to consider when deciding on where you will stay.

5. Save on Food

Packing your own food and snacks for the drive will save you money. If you have room to have a cooler you can even pack quick easy picnic type meals. Sandwiches, fruit, and cold pasta salads stay nice and fresh in Ziploc bags or Tupperware. Bring your own water bottle. A basic bottle of water can cost up to $3 at a gas station or drive-thru fast food restaurant so take your own if you can. Also, be sure and research the nearest grocery store to your destination.  Buying groceries will help save on expensive food and beverages you would end up purchasing on your trip.

The most important thing about any vacation is that you have fun and create memories. Whether it is a staycation, traveling locally or out of state, at the end of the day it is all about enjoying your time together as a family and, of course, having fun.
