In a world where many of us have more than we need yet many more struggle to cover basic needs to live, celebrating special events by giving back is an idea that is growing in popularity. Instead of throwing herself a party or accepting gifts from friends and family, United Way employee Lindsay Duncan recently celebrated her thirty-third birthday by organizing projects to brighten lives in our community.

"There has been so much violence and hate-filled propaganda in the world lately that I decided to step up my game and be the change I want to see in the world," said Lindsay. "As I get older, I want the things I do to have more purpose."

To spread the love, Lindsay asked friends and family to help her with two "alternative birthday" events. The first was a Halloween pumpkin carving party at the Milwaukee Women’s Shelter. Her aunt and uncle donated pumpkins, and other family and friends donated pumpkin carving kits and helped with treat bags, cupcakes, and juice for the party.

"I have always loved fall and Halloween," said Lindsay. "I wanted to share my love of the season with children who are going through a difficult time in their lives."

The mothers and children at the shelter enjoyed the pumpkin carving party so much Lindsay and her family and friends have already started brainstorming for another event at the shelter next year.

The second project was aimed at helping people at Guest House of Milwaukee, transition into their own homes. Lindsay created kits consisting of cleaning and personal care products, kitchen utensils and other home basics. She invited friends and family members to help her collect items, bundle and deliver the kits. On October 24, she delivered three new home kits to the Guest House.

"I appreciate having a cozy place to live and I hope these kits help people – who probably haven’t had a home of their own in a long time – to make their new home their own," said Lindsay.

To Lindsay, honoring her birthday by giving back had a double impact. Not only did she brighten the lives of other people in the community, she was able to spend quality time with the people she loves.

"I am so thankful to all of the friends and family who helped make these projects happen," said Lindsay. "We made such an amazing impact because of everyone’s help."
