Responding to the need for nutritious food options, especially for families who are unable to afford them, volunteers from Community Memorial Hospital in Menomonee Falls maintain and harvest a bounty of fresh garden produce each summer.

In 2014, the community garden at the hospital yielded over 1,100 pounds of produce.  A wide variety of fresh fruits and vegetables were distributed to patients at the Community Outreach Health Clinic and local food pantries in Washington and Waukesha counties.

Since 2000, the Community Outreach Health Clinic, a new program partner in United Way’s Health Portfolio, has provided quality, affordable health and wellness care to uninsured and underinsured residents of Waukesha, Washington and northwest Milwaukee Counties. Many of the clinic’s patients have chronic conditions that require regular monitoring and medications to prevent their condition from escalating to a crisis.

A registered dietician also volunteers at the clinic to educate patients on the importance of good nutrition, particularly those newly-diagnosed with diabetes or high cholesterol, or patients needing to lose weight.

Combined, these volunteer efforts are making an impact on the overall health of patients at the clinic – through healthy food access, education, and good nutrition. Just recently the volunteers who help with the garden were also recognized by the Partners of Wisconsin Hospital Association (WHA) and received the 2014 Wisconsin Award for Volunteer Excellence (WAVE).
