Last month, community members gathered for a viewing at the Oriental Theatre of the world premiere of Milwaukee 53206. The documentary chronicles the lives and daily dram of those affected by incarceration. It specifically brought attention to the 53206 zip code on Milwaukee’s north side where the incarceration rate of black males is the highest in the country.
Dennis Walton, Outreach Coordinator from the Milwaukee Fatherhood Initiative, was featured in the film. He serves as a resource for fathers by demonstrating and educating the importance of men being good role models for their families. After the film, Dennis spoke as part of a Q&A on how the audience members can support both family and their community and help continue to create positive change in our four-county region.
Since the premiere of the documentary, Dennis says more local fathers are getting involved to learn more about the Milwaukee Fatherhood Initiative and the importance of setting a good example for their families. They even held a “500 Fathers” event to celebrate Father’s Day. It was attended by fathers in Milwaukee who wanted to recommit themselves to their family and community. Additionally, the Milwaukee Fatherhood Initiative is planning many more events to continue inspiring fathers and promote healthy families.
