The City’s 16th annual Back-to-School Health Fairs are happening this month. If you didn’t make it to the Health Fair August 19 at North Division High, they are holding one more fair at South Division High School (1515 W Lapham Blvd.) from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m this Friday August 26. Heather Puente, Program Manager of Empowering Families of Milwaukee and the City of Milwaukee Health Department shares why its important families in our community attend this event

Having up-to-date immunizations are essential to promoting healthy growth and development of children. With school season just around the corner the annual Back-to-School Health Fairs offer families an opportunity to get their children ready for a healthy school year. Services at each fair include school-required vaccinations, lead testing, blood pressure checks, and dental screenings. Additionally, there will be 50 community agencies available providing resources and health information to all attendees.

One of the great features of the Back-to-School Health Fairs are the free backpacks and school supplies provided to children with an up-to-date shot record, or those who receive vaccinations and lead testing at the fairs. Children must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian to receive gifts and services.

We are thankful to our generous sponsors for their support and to all the organizations providing services and resources at both fairs. The health fairs are presented by the City of Milwaukee Health Department, United Way of Greater Milwaukee & Waukesha County, and Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin in partnership with Children’s Community Health Plan, United Healthcare, Molina Healthcare, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Independent Care Plan, MHS Health Wisconsin, Milwaukee Urban League and Bunzel’s. Bonus features this year are appearances by Cookie Monster and free haircuts for attendees!

MHD wants all families have access to required vaccinations and health screenings that are essential to keeping schools and our community healthy year round. For more information, call (414) 286-3521 or visit www.milwaukee.gov/health.
