The mission of Auer Avenue Community School is to work in partnership with students, families and community members to nurture student success, support healthy and engaged families, and build a strong, peaceful and united community. Auer Avenue is using the Milwaukee Community Schools Partnership (MCSP) to engage our students, family and community partners to increase the academic outcomes and improve the behavioral health of our students.

We are working in partnership with a broad range of partners (students, staff, parents, residents, and community organizations) to address key areas identified by the school community including; Mentorship, Tutoring, Behavioral Health and Family Engagement. Restorative Practices are being implemented as a part of the learning structure to develop stronger relationships within the school community. We have many partners that we work with in the Amani Neighborhood and program partners who are vital to bringing non-traditional educational experiences to our students.

Our goals for the future include increasing our alignment of community partnerships around shared goals, increasing our outreach into the Amani neighborhood and continuing to see our students’ academic scores improve.

What was your favorite book as a child?

Caps for Sale: A Tale of a Peddler, Some Monkeys and Their Monkey Business By: Esphyr Slobodkina

Who was your favorite teacher in school and why?

The school nurse, Sister Mary Lu Slowey because she took time to find out who each child was and engaged herself in our culture while sharing hers. It helped that she also always made us feel better. She’s ninety years old now, but we still keep in touch.

What did you want to be (career) when you were a child?

I always wanted to be a teacher and love that I work in a school now.

Explain your most embarrassing moment as a child?

I was bitten by a spider at camp and got a swollen lip from it.
