Why You Need to Volunteer at IT United Career Fair

Main Content

I attended my first IT United Career Fair two years ago. I was part of a presentation on Lean, Entrepreneurship and Continuous Improvement. When I arrived, I quickly learned a lot of the students attending had very little exposure to what information technology, let alone entrepreneurial thinking, was all about.

As soon as we started our presentation, we got their attention and creative minds churning when we started asking them to share their ideas and encouraged them to take small steps so that they could explain how it would work. We also shared examples and success stories to help them better understand these concepts. While some kids paid more attention than others, it was clear that we definitely got some of them thinking. By the end of the event, I came out with a stronger belief that this is something we, as a community, need to continue doing.

I think being a part of the IT United Career fair not only helps inspire students in our community, but it also benefits us IT Professionals, because we get to to see the potential of these students and how it will affect the future of IT.

In case you didn’t know, businesses in Milwaukee and Waukesha County need more skilled IT professionals than ever before. This is why it is incumbent upon us to develop a sustainable pool of IT resources in our community.

I also truly enjoy the fair because it gives you a chance to collaborate with other IT peers from organizations all over Greater Milwaukee. You get to learn new ideas along the way and develop new relationships. And, with diversity of roles present and volunteers coming from different areas of IT talking about varying topics, we are also able to show the different possibilities of an IT career. This helps broaden kids’ views beyond stereotypes popularized on television and the movies.

This year, the IT United Career Fair will take place on Tuesday, March 31, 4:30 - 8:00 p.m. at the the UW-Milwaukee Student Union. 150 students are expected to participate.

IT United is currently looking for volunteers to lead roundtable discussions at the career fair.  Topics will include: Project & Risk Management; Mobility & Application Development; Entrepreneurship; IT Infrastructure & Security; Analytics, Statistics & BI; Social Media, Web & Mobile Development.

Ultimately, each one of us has a stake in ensuring that our community remains a vibrant environment for IT. So I ask you please take to the time to volunteer at the career fair, and help us reach that goal.
