United Way of Greater Milwaukee & Waukesha County is fortunate to have volunteers who care deeply about their community, giving effortlessly and tirelessly of their time and talents to make a positive impact.

Paul Sweeney has volunteered for United Way in various roles, but is best known for his ability to recruit others by sharing his enthusiasm for our mission.

How did you first get involved with the United Way?

About 10 years ago, I was asked to be part of United Way’s Campaign Cabinet. Since then, I have volunteered my time in different capacities including serving on the financial stability portfolio committee and also on United Way’s Board. It was my experience serving on the board that really opened my eyes to all facets of the United Way.

What do you enjoy most about volunteering for United Way?

I’m proud to be part of an organization that recognizes needs in the community and addresses them by making sure every dollar donated is put to the most efficient use. I saw this first-hand when I was involved with the financial stability portfolio committee. There are so many people involved and so much work done behind the scenes to make sure resources are allocated to where the need is greatest.

You’re known for your success in recruiting other people to volunteer for United Way. What do you say to someone to inspire or encourage them to volunteer?

It’s not that hard, really. United Way of Greater Milwaukee & Waukesha County is a great organization, and it’s not a huge time commitment, so who wouldn’t want to volunteer for them?

I also believe strongly in the important work United Way does. I encourage people to go out and visit the agency programs United Way funds to see what they’re accomplishing and meet the recipients of their services. I had the opportunity to do this and it made a huge impression on me. When you meet a homeless person and get to hear first-hand how an agency is providing them with a meal, safety and security, you see the true collaborative impact United Way is having on our community. Who wouldn’t want to be a part of that?
